Leader Spotlight

Saggese.MartyMarty Saggese (Young Leader 1998)

Executive Director, Society for Neuroscience

What do you like most about Switzerland?
The Swiss people and their wickedly dry sense of humor. It was great fun getting to know some of them as a Young Leader.

What do you like most about the USA?
The American “can-do” spirit.

What defines your leadership style?
I am very focused, goal-driven and results-oriented, and I’ve learned how to enlist other people to come along on the journey.

Who inspires you?
I had the great privilege to meet the Dalai Lama a few years ago. When you meet him and talk with him and listen to him, you know that he is really somebody special, not like anyone you’ve ever met.

What is your greatest achievement?
Although I have of course changed and grown and learned a lot over the course of my life, I think my core values have stayed intact, and I feel pretty good about that.

Do you have any weaknesses?
Impatience, though I’m getting better as I get older, or maybe I’m just getting more tired.

Where do you live?
Chevy Chase, Maryland

What is your favorite place in the world?
Venice, Italy. Or when I can’t be there, fishing on the lake at our weekend home.

What is the best book you ever read?
I don’t know about “ever,” but the best book I have read this year is Great By Choice by Jim Collins.

What is your goal in life?
I have spent my whole working life working for mission-driven organizations, with missions that matter in a larger, societal sense. I hope to go on doing that.
