Leader Spotlight

mcpike.erinErin McPike (Young Leader 2012)

Washington Correspondent, CNN

What do you like most about Switzerland?
The attitude of all the people there. And so much about how the government works. I'm a political junkie, and there's a lot of interest in politics there, but it's far more civil there.

What do you like most about the USA?
How big it is - and how every region is so different. If you need a change of scenery, it's easy to take one.

What defines your leadership style?
That's not a question reporters often get. We like to take ownership of what we're reporting on, master it, and teach other people what we've found. It all stems from curiosity and competition.

Who inspires you?
People who are fearless and tenacious. War correspondents.

What is your greatest achievement?
I broke a series of stories on the presidential race in 2011, and the collection of those stands out most to me. That probably helped me to get hired at CNN, which could also be the greatest one.

Do you have any weaknesses?
Many. Curiosity, competition and ambition among them.

Where do you live?
Washington, DC, in a neighborhood not far from downtown, but where many young professionals play and prosper, between two well-known streets, U Street and 14th Street.

What is your favorite place in the world?
I have a strange love for airports. My favorite place to travel is probably Italy.

What is the best book you ever read?
It's hard to choose between Atlas Shrugged and A Farewell to Arms.

What is your goal in life?
To moderate a Presidential debate in a general election.
