The eighth Young Leaders Conference, sponsored by Zurich Insurance and Swissair, was the first YL Conference to be held in Zurich. The class was the largest at the time, with 44 Young Leaders. Ambassador André Schaller, former Swiss Consul General in New York City and now Swiss Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, was a member of this class.

The class of 1997 also included Luc-Antoine Baehni, the former CEO of CGN Compagnie Générale de Navigation sur le lac Léman; Carol Barnett, trustee of Carleton College and medical technology executive and investor; The Honorable Clark Ervin, the first Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (2003–2004); Hanspeter Faessler, chairman of the board of directors of Dätwyler Cabling Solutions AG; Alain Freymond, CEO and founding partner of BBGI Group, an asset management company headquartered in Geneva; William Grace, COO at Good Works Health; Jürg Hauswirth, Douglas Jennings, Jr., former member of the South Carolina House of Representatives; Professor Richard Painter, former associate counsel to President George W. Bush in the White House Counsel’s office; and Armstrong Williams, owner of HSH Media.
