In 2002, the Young Leaders Conference, sponsored by Novartis International and Swiss International Air Lines, was held for the third time in Zurich; this time at the Hotel Atlantis, set at the foot of the city’s Uetliberg mountain. The class of 2002 includes André Wyss, CEO of Implenia; Brian C. Deese, global head of sustainable investing at BlackRock; The Honorable Brian P. Kavanagh, New York State Senator for the 26th district; Daniel Hug, Managing Director, LGT, The Family Office and Bank of the Princely House of Liechtenstein; Ambassador Olaf Kjelsen, Swiss Ambassador to Greece; Byron W. Brown, mayor of the City of Buffalo, the second largest city in the State of New York; and Colonel Suzanne C. Nielsen, professor of Political Science and the head of the Department of Social Sciences at West Point.
Members of this class also include The Honorable Van Tran, former member of the California State Assembly (2004–2010) for the 68th district; Brandt Pasco, who recently became General Counsel of Saudi Arabian Military Industries in Riyadh; Lawrence Stratton, director of the Stover Center for Constitutional Studies and Associate Professor at Waynesburg University; Vincent Cannato, associate professor of history at the University of Massachusetts Boston; Tyson Slocum, director of Public Citizen’s Energy Program, covering the regulation of petroleum, natural gas, and power markets; Ian Vásquez, director of the Cato Institute's Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity; The Honorable Julie Denton, former Kentucky State Senator for the 36th district and Louisville council member for the 19th district; Benjamin Balint,a writer living in Jerusalem whose most recent publication is Jerusalem: City of the Book (2019); and Chantal Bourquin, director of communications for the Geneva Financial Center.
