Captain Clark Gable, at right, with Eighth Air Force Commanding Officer, Major General Ira Eaker, outside the General's High Wycombe headquarters in September, 1943.

The movie star had come to England on a special assignment to make a film for training aerial gunners. Gable flew on five combat missions in the process of making this film and was attached to the 351st Heavy Bombardment Group at Polebrook, England.

Gable's wife, movie actress Carole Lombard, had died in an air crash years earlier while returning home from a war bond drive.
